My name is Tre Borden, and I am the program manager for a transformative public art project called Bright Underbelly. What is Bright Underbelly? It is a game-changing 70,000 square foot mural that will wrap the grey cement of the Capitol City Freeway’s W/X streets underpass with color. Bright Underbelly will bring a much-needed warmth and a sense of permanence to an established community-gathering place, befitting California’s largest Certified Farmers Market. It will also provide visible support for our region’s identification as the Farm-To-Fork capital of the world.

My collaborators are the talented duo behind L/C Mural & Design, Sofia Lacin and Hennessy Christophel. We envision a mural that embraces the longevity and impact of The Sunday Farmers’ Market and is a tribute to the culture and history of its Southside Sacramento location.  Our team has worked closely with Dan Best, one of the founding farmers and the manager of the market, various community groups and CalTrans.  Our goal is to create a project that is a replicable template for community-based improvement, and we are excited that CalTrans recently selected Bright Underbelly for a pilot program where our project will be used as a test-case for future projects throughout the state.  When completed in October 2014, Bright Underbelly will be a highly recognizable icon representing Sacramento’s past and present a beacon for its future.

Realizing this bold vision for our community requires citizens and stakeholders who are committed to making it happen. It will take $150,000 raised from the community to see this project come to life. We have received a key matching grant of $50,000 from the California Endowment, and are approaching other corporate, foundation, and individual donors to reach the rest of our goal.  We hope that you will contribute your support. I have attached information about sponsorship levels and a donor form.  We are partnering with a locally-based non-profit Reason to Give who will serve as our fiscal agent, allowing all contributions to be tax-deductible. The project design and donor video can be found on www.brightunderbelly.com. Please contact me to set up a meeting or ask for more information.

We look forward to working with you,

Tre Borden
